Luan's POV
I sat in the hall at three in the morning with my back against the front door and a tire iron across my knees.
She was asleep in my bed.
I could hear her breathe from here, slow and even, through the open bedroom door.
Ermal had left her scarf on my step.
He had walked up my front steps in the dark and laid it where I would step on it.
I had spent twenty years keeping that man's temper out of rooms, and I knew what the scarf meant.
It meant he was not afraid of me anymore.
I had been cut off for two weeks.
On the third day I went to the card club on Morris Park Avenue to collect my coat from the back office.
I had hung that coat on the same hook for eleven years.
The manager stood in the doorway with his arms folded, and he did not move.
"Your coat's in the alley," he said.
"I'll get it."
"Don't come in here again, Luan."
