Chapter 12: His Ex

Sylvie's POV

Gretchen came in at a run, still in her sweatshirt, with her hair loose.

She stopped when she saw the room.

She saw her father, and Helen at the foot of his bed, and Harrison holding the basket of flowers.

"Dad?"

"Sit, sweetheart," Mr. Keating said. "I told them."

"Told them what?"

"That I never asked for a wedding."

Helen laid her hand on the blanket.

"Gretchen, dear, your father is tired. The medication confuses him. Let's not say anything we'll regret."

"I'm not confused," Mr. Keating said.

"You'll stay out of this, Helen," said Gretchen.

It was the quietest thing I had ever heard her say.

She looked at her left hand.

She worked my ring off over the knuckle, and it took a long time, and it left a red mark.

Then she crossed the room and put it in the middle of Helen's white flowers.

"Take it back," she said. "And take your hospice. I'll carry him out of here myself if I have to."

"Gretchen." Helen's voice was gentle. "You can't. Without me he has no bed by tonight."

"He has one at the Sterne's care wing in Brookline," said Nathaniel from the window, in an even voice. "My mother lived there. Everything's paid. Nobody asks."

Helen turned her head and looked at him.

It was the first time I had seen her without her face arranged.
