Chapter 13: The First Script
Helen laughed.
It was a soft, fond sound, and she sat back down in the front row and folded her hands.
"Harrison, darling, you're exhausted. Put the phone away and we'll all have lunch."
Nobody in the garden moved toward the tables.
The woman from the board, the one who had asked for the original lease form, spoke from the third row.
"Read it, Harrison," she said. "Let's hear the first one."
Harrison scrolled.
His thumb went a long way down the screen before it stopped.
"Four years ago," he said. "Two weeks before the wedding. 'Take Gretchen to the Fenway dinner. Seat Sylvie at the far end. Do not explain. Afterward tell her it proves she loves you.'"
A chair creaked somewhere behind me.
"I did it," Harrison said. "She cried in the car. I kissed her forehead and said it proved she loved me."
He looked at me then, and his face was a stranger's.
"That's the one you remember, Em. Fenway. You wore green."
"I remember," I said.
"I thought I came up with it." He turned the phone toward the rows. "Here's last Christmas. 'Let her see the tag on Gretchen's present. The bigger box. Smile.' Here's the one for our anniversary. 'Cancel dinner for a board call. Take Gretchen to the symphony instead. She will not say a word.'"
"That's enough," Helen said.
"You wrote 'she will not say a word,'" Harrison said. "And I believed you, because I never heard her say one."
I had not said one.
I had said thank you, every time, and I heard it now, in the garden, in my own voice.
Helen stood.
She did not hurry.
She smoothed her camel skirt and turned her back on her son.
She spoke to the rows of chairs as though she were opening a meeting.
