Chapter 14: Brookline
The Sterne's care wing in Brookline had a long hall of pale carpet.
At the far end a window looked out over a dark garden.
Mr. Keating slept in the room behind us with the cello music turned low.
Gretchen sat beside him holding his hand, and she had not looked up since we arrived.
Nathaniel and I stood in the hall because there was nowhere else to put ourselves.
At nine that night his phone lit up in his palm.
He read it and his mouth went flat.
"What is it?"
"My lawyer." He held the phone out. "He's been reading Harrison's thread since four o'clock."
The text said: Holloway stock off six percent after hours.
Under it: If the Keating land goes to the daughter, the new tower stalls and they lose the quarter.
Under that: Keep pressing her.
I read it twice.
Then I gave the phone back.
"Keep pressing her," I said.
"Sylvie, that's his word, not mine."
"But it's your lawyer. And it's your plan."
I heard how steady my voice was and hated it.
"A rival owner, four years at a window, a room held in a name. Now Helen's stock is falling, and the girl in the cream coat is the one who made it fall."
"That's not what this is."
"Helen said I only took the part of Harrison he'd have given away. What if I'm only the part of Helen you can use?"
Nathaniel put the phone in his pocket.
He took his time doing it.
"I wanted her to lose," he said. "For four years that was the whole of me. I'm not going to say it wasn't."
"Then why did you pay my cab?"
"Because you walked out of that door and it was the first time anyone had." He kept his voice low, for the sleeper's sake. "And I'll tell you what I saw today, since we're counting. In the garden you watched Harrison leave. You watched him all the way to the gate."
"I did."
