Chapter 24: Ambulance Bay
I didn't put my hands up.
Nobody had asked me to.
"You're on hospital property," I said.
"I know where I am, Doc. I've carried a lot of people in here."
He came three steps closer.
The gun didn't waver.
His neck did.
I could see his pulse jumping above his collar, fast and thready.
A hundred and twenty, at least.
"Your sergeant ran a serial number this morning," I said.
"I heard it on the radio. Him and the whole district." He wet his lips. "Three years, nobody had anything. Then you go and remember a tooth."
"What do you want?"
"Your phone. The pictures of my truck. And that page with your thumb on it." He jerked his head at the pickup. "Then you get in, and we take a drive while I think."
"No."
"I'm not asking."
"I know." I kept my voice level, the one for a falling pressure. "You've got about ten minutes before your hands start shaking. After that you'll miss."
"I didn't miss him."
"You hit him once out of three. I closed the hole you made."
Headlights swung into the bay behind me.
