Chapter 11: Whose Son

Ty got out of his truck as soon as I crossed the parking lot, and he stopped ten feet from me.

He looked at the envelope in my arms.

"Tell me," he said.

I didn't say it.

I held it out to him.

He took it with both hands and read the page standing by the front bumper, and I watched his lips move on the number.

He read it again.

He didn't make a sound.

He folded the paper in half with great care, and handed it back to me, and walked around the side of his truck.

I heard him throw up in the grass.

Pete started forward, and I put a hand on his arm.

"Let him."

Ty braced himself on the truck bed with one hand and spat, and wiped his mouth on his sleeve.

When he turned around his eyes were red and wet.

"He's ours," he said.

"Yes."

"The whole time he's been ours."

"Yes."

"I stood on that ice and I held him up and I said, this is my son." His voice broke. "And I was right. I was right, and I didn't know what I was saying."

"No."

"I let you go through five years of flowers. I stood next to you at a grave that wasn't there."

"There was no grave."

"I know. I know." He pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes. "She let me think there was. She let both of us."

I watched him closely.

I had spent a week thinking Ty was hiding something, and for a week I had watched every flicker of his face.
