Chapter 12: Tea
Ty didn't sit.
He stood in his mother's front hall holding out the lab paper, and he said, "Read it."
Bernadette took it by one corner, and read it without hurry.
"I see," she said.
"Eli is Lena's son. And mine."
"That's what this says."
"Mom, say something."
She set the page down on the tray beside the teapot.
"What would you like me to say, Tyler? That I'm shocked? I'm shocked."
"You cremated a baby that weighed two pounds," I said. "And you called it mine."
"A baby died that morning at Lakeshore General. Yours. I made the arrangements, because you were in no condition."
"My baby weighed seven pounds."
"The hospital sent what it sent," her lawyer said smoothly. "Mrs. Dolan wasn't present for the weighing. Neither were you."
"I wasn't asking you," I said.
Bernadette lifted a cup of tea and held it in both hands.
"Lena. You're a mother. You're exhausted, you're frightened, and a laboratory has handed you a piece of paper. Think what you're accusing me of."
"I'm not accusing you of anything yet. I'm asking why you put Ty's name on Eli's birth certificate before Shelby woke up."
The cup stopped halfway to her mouth.
"Tyler was the father."
"Mom. I didn't know the baby was mine. You told me that morning it died."
"And I was right, wasn't I?" Her voice sharpened for the first time. "The boy is yours. I made sure he had your name. He's had a home, and a grandmother, and a mother who loves him. What exactly did I take?"
The hall went silent.
I heard the grandfather clock behind her, ticking.
"You took my son," I said.
"I gave a child a family."
