Chapter 13: Gone Dark

Shelby's apartment in Lakewood was dark, and the super let us in with a passkey after Ty showed him his face.

The closets were half empty.

Her toothbrush was gone, and so was Eli's night-light, and the fridge door still had his drawing of a purple dinosaur on it.

"She packed in a hurry," Pete said.

"She packed for a week," I said. "Look at the suitcase hooks."

Ty stood in the middle of the living room with the stegosaurus in his fist.

He had grabbed it off his mother's bench on the way out, and he hadn't let go of it since.

"I called her half a dozen times," he said. "Her sister doesn't know. Her salon says she cancelled the whole month."

"Where would she go?"

"Anywhere. She's got nobody."

"She's got her mother's place," Pete said. "You told me once. At the bar, in the playoffs, you were drunk."

Ty's head came up.

"The cabin," he said. "On the lake, past Geneva. Her mother died there. She hasn't sold it."

"How far?"

"An hour and a half."

I was already walking to the door.

Ty caught my elbow on the landing, gently, and let go the moment I looked at his hand.

"Lena. Before we go. I need you to hear something."

"Then say it fast."

"I'll do whatever you want. Tell me what you need."

I turned around on the stairs and held up one finger.

"No cameras," I said. "Nobody films this. Not your team, not a reporter, not your mother's friends with their phones."

"Done."

I held up two.

"No money. You don't buy your way back in. Not a check, not a house, not a gift basket. You pay me what you owe me through my lawyer and nothing else."

"Done."

I held up three.
