Chapter 20: On His Knees

Torin's POV

Willa opened her mouth to answer the Regent, and I stepped in front of her.

"Let him have the Stone," I said.

"Torin." Her hand closed on my sleeve. "You don't have to."

"I do."

I had spent two weeks being careful of her.

I had been careful of the rule and the line and the hour.

I was done with careful.

I walked across the sand to the black rock, and every Alpha in the hall watched me go.

The Regent came down off his dais, smiling, and stopped three paces from the Stone.

"Captain Vance," he said. "Your palm."

I laid it flat.

The rock was cold, and then it wasn't.

I felt it take hold of the inside of my mouth, patient and enormous.

"Is the mark on your throat true?" the Regent asked.

"Yes."

"Did you forge it, or pay the Seer?"

"No."

"Then answer me this. You say you are her mate." The Regent took one more step. "You say you felt her for two years. Why did you not go to her in all that time?"

I could hear the room hold still.

I could hear her behind me.

The Stone pulled the answer out of me before I could pick the shape of it.

"Because I didn't know it was her," I said. "Not until the sixth day of waiting at her gate."

"And on the sixth day?"

"I was there when she fell."

My voice shook.

"I felt the line go through me, and I put my boot across it, and my oath threw me down. I lay in the leaves and I did not get up in time. She lost the baby while I lay there. I will never be forgiven for that and I know it."
