Chapter 13: Sisters

Peg stopped the Buick ten feet from Bella's bumper and left the headlights on her.

Bella put up a hand against the glare.

"Stay in the car," I said to Santiago.

"She hit me with a car," he said. "I'm not scared of her."

"I know. She's scared of you. I want her talking, not fainting."

He looked at Bella in the headlights for a long moment.

Then he leaned back against the seat and folded his hands over the head of his cane.

"Leave the door open," he said.

I got out.

The trunk lid bounced on its bungee cord behind me. The tarp had slipped. One corner of the bent grille stuck out under the streetlight.

Bella's eyes went straight to it.

So she already knew.

"Daddy's guys called him from Cicero," she said. "They said you took something."

"Hi, Bella."

"Don't be like that." Her voice was soft and wet, the way it always was. "It's freezing. Can we go inside?"

"No."

Peg came around the front of the Buick and stood on her own lawn with her arms folded over her Bears sweatshirt.

"You can stand on the sidewalk," Peg said. "The sidewalk belongs to the city."
