Chapter 16: The Contract

I didn't say anything for a long time.

The paramedics went back to their rig. The police officer went inside, shaking his head.

The tech touched my elbow. "Boss. You want me to stay?"

"No. Go home. Soak your feet."

He went, looking back twice.

Santiago stood in the slush in his wet shirt.

"Get in the car," he said. "You're cold. I'll explain."

"I'm not getting in your car."

He heard the echo. I watched it land on him.

"Thursday," I said. "Nine. The gym. I said I'd be there, so I'll be there."

I walked to the parking lot on my bad knee and didn't look back.

Peg didn't ask in the Buick.

She waited until I'd had a shower and a plate of eggs, and then she sat across from me with her tea.

"So he's not perfect," she said.

"He kept the contract they paid him with for me. And he didn't tell me."

Peg thought about that.

"That's two things," she said. "Which one's making you crazy?"

I didn't answer.

She already knew.

On Thursday at nine, I rode the elevator to the top of the hotel on the river.

The gym was the same. The glass, the city, the towel over the mirror.

Santiago was standing between the parallel bars with no cane, waiting for me.
