Chapter 17: Out

The chair read the invoice twice.

Then he passed it to the woman on his left, and she passed it down the table without a word.

Dalton laughed.

It came out too high.

"It's a timing issue," he said. "The account was going to be reimbursed. It's called a bridge. Every finance man does it."

"For a wedding," said the woman halfway down the table.

"For a corporate event."

"Which corporate event has a bride?"

Nobody answered.

"There was a line on the invoice," Elliot said. "Flowers, a string quartet, and a sheet cake in the shape of two rings."

"Elliot, stop it."

"You chose the cake, Dalton. You chose it for the wedding you were about to hold with Willa, while Posy was sitting at your kitchen table throwing up."

Posy gripped my sleeve.

The chair set the invoice down.

"I'd like a motion," he said.

"I move," the woman halfway down said, "that Constance Lowell be removed from the board for conduct toward a company employee, and that Dalton Lowell be suspended without pay pending an audit of his expenses."

"Second," said a gray-haired man at the corner.

Constance stood up.

She had stopped smiling.

It changed her face, and I saw for the first time what had been underneath it all along.

"This board exists because of my husband," she said. "I sat in his chair when he was dying."
