Chapter 18: The Notebook

Hannah's POV

Piper's husband landed at Redwing's base at two in a plain gray helicopter, and he walked across the apron with an accountant and no hurry at all.

He was in his late fifties, silver at the temples, in a suit that cost more than my car.

I had met him once, at my wedding, and he'd shaken my hand and forgotten my name.

Piper came down the steps behind him in sunglasses.

Dalton met them at the hangar door with both arms out.

He saw me standing against the wall with Jonah, and the dispatcher between us, and his arms came down.

"Hannah is a guest," he said to the husband. "Family. She was just leaving."

"Mrs. Teague," the husband said. "I am sorry for your loss."

"Thank you."

"And I'd like to hear what she has to say, Dalton, before I look at your numbers."

The dispatcher stepped forward.

She still had her headset around her neck.

I had put my black notebook in her hands in the car, because the calls in it were hers.

She held it in both hands now, and her hands were steady, which surprised me.

"Sir, I took the call from Mrs. Teague on the night of the fire," she said. "I'd like to give you something. Five years of it."

"Sir," Dalton said, "she's under review for a conduct issue."

"I haven't been told," the dispatcher said.

"I'm telling you now."

"Dalton," the husband said, without looking at him. "Be quiet."

He took the notebook and opened it to the first page.

I watched him read the first line, and the second, and then he turned the page and turned it again.

The whole operations floor had stopped.
