Chapter 15: Receipt
"You what?" Rett said, and sat up in the white bed with the sheet falling to his waist.
"I paid it off," Ward said. "All of it. Last Monday."
"Two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars," Rett said.
"Yes," Ward said.
"You paid two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars of my debt," Rett said.
"It was a bill, Rett. Not a gift."
Rett got out of the bed.
He found his jeans on the floor and his shirt on the lamp, and he dressed with fingers that did not work.
He had been warm a minute ago.
He had said yours into the pillow, and meant it, and now the word lay in him like a swallowed nail.
"Rett," Ward said.
"Don't."
"Please let me explain," Ward said.
"You've had two years to explain." Rett buttoned the shirt wrong and left it. "You had a week."
"I didn't want you to lose the shop," Ward said.
"I wasn't going to lose the shop."
"Calvin had a lien lawyer on retainer. If the line collapsed, he'd have called your note," Ward said.
"That's none of your business."
"It became my business the night I went to the inn," Ward said.
Rett stared at him.
Ward sat against the iron headboard with the sheet over his thighs, bare and bruised and open.
He had never looked more like a man about to be hit.
"Term three," Rett said. "No gifts."
"You kept the chisels," Ward said.
