Chapter 10: The Folder

Tobias's POV

I read the first page of Dominic's folder twice before I understood it.

It wasn't hard to read.

I had just never tried.

Allegra stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, not helping me.

I was grateful for that.

The first page was a summary of terms for the sale of DePeyster Harbor's shipping division.

The buyer's name was a fund I had never heard of.

The closing date was three weeks away.

I turned the page.

The second page was a schedule of debts.

Next to each loan was a column marked guarantor.

The Bellandi fund's name had been struck through on every line.

Under it, in neat type, someone had written mine.

Tobias DePeyster, personally.

I traced the numbers down the column with my finger.

It came to forty million dollars.

"That isn't mine," I said.

Allegra didn't move.

"It's your name."

"I know it's my name. I didn't sign that."

"Look at the signature."

I looked.

It was my signature, in my blue pen, on every line.

The date at the bottom was Thursday.

I remembered the bar.

Dominic had slid a folder at me, and I had signed it without looking down, because I was watching Allegra's face across the ballroom.

I had signed away forty million dollars without looking down.

My knees felt weak, and I sat on the desk.

I turned another page.

The third one was her transfer.

It was the authorization with her signature, her father's seal, and a line at the bottom for the approving officer.
