Chapter 14: Say It All

Claire's POV

Trevor lifted his phone and held the lit screen up to the glass.

I could not read it from the car.

Nathaniel's guard crossed the street at a walk, and the sedan pulled away from the curb before he arrived.

Nathaniel watched its taillights all the way to the corner.

"He wanted you to see him," he said.

"He wanted me to be scared."

"Are you?"

"Not tonight."

I went upstairs with the box of notebooks in my arms, and he came up behind me.

The guard took the chair on the landing, and I shut the studio door on the three of us.

I put the notebooks on the folding table and turned around.

"All of it," I said. "Start with the Tuesday."

He told me.

He did not dress it up, and he did not spare himself.

Then he told me what he had never told anyone.

He still had my voicemail, and he played it for himself every Tuesday.

"You wrote that I should say yes," he said. "Then you wrote tomorrow."

"I remember writing it."

"I stood in a dead woman's handwriting and I knew exactly how she sounded when she was annoyed."

"I don't sound annoyed."

"You write 'obviously' in the margin before you cross something out," he said. "You were very annoyed."

I laughed, and it came out wet.

"I thought you wanted the formulas," I said. "Only that. Four calls, a lab, a contract with my name in it. I thought it was a good offer from a cold man."

"It was a good offer."

"Was that all of it?"

"No," Nathaniel said.

His voice had gone low.

"I wanted the formulas for four years. Then I read the woman who wrote them, and I wanted her more than I have ever wanted anything. And I could not tell her, because to her I was a man who had stood at a coat check."

"Say it again."

"I want you."

"Say what you want."

He crossed the room in three steps.

"I want to put you on that table," he said, "and I want to hear you say my name."
