Chapter 31: The Broker's Call

Claire's POV

Patricia called at six on Tuesday morning.

I was in the Brooklyn studio, in the narrow bed, with Nathaniel asleep against my back.

I took the phone to the stairwell and shut the door behind me.

"Claire," she said. "My broker has a friend in the holding company's registry office. I am sorry to be the one."

"Sorry for what?"

"Nathaniel's voting shares in Rhodes Family Holdings were moved into the family trust. The paper is dated Sunday, and it was filed this morning. Harold holds the vote for three years."

I sat down on the top stair.

"Are you sure?"

"My broker is never wrong. She is very expensive."

"Thank you, Patricia."

"There is no reason to thank me. I would have wanted to know."

I hung up and sat in the stairwell with my elbows on my knees.

Sunday.

He had gone up to the study at seven.

I had been eating dinner with his father at eight.

I did not wake him.

I dressed in the dark and walked to the subway, and I waited until I got to the lab to be angry.

He came into the sixth-floor lab at a quarter to nine, with coffee for both of us.

Eleven chemists were setting up benches, and the woman with the houseplant had put it on the windowsill.

Nathaniel put my coffee on the counter in front of me.

"You left early," he said.

"Sunday night," I said.

He stopped with the cup in his hand.

"You told me you'd asked your father to call off the shelf war and he said he'd think about it. He thought about it for two hours, and then he called it off."

"Claire."

"Your shares went to the family trust on Sunday. He holds your vote for three years."
