Chapter 38: The Lawyer's Price

Nathaniel's POV

I told my wife before I went, because I had given my word.

"I'll be in the church by a quarter past five," I said in the studio's dark kitchen. "He'll look for me in the pews, so I won't be in the pews."

"He said alone."

"He said it about a man he's afraid of. He didn't say it about a husband who keeps his promises."

She looked at me for a long moment and then handed me her scarf.

"Cold in those old churches," Claire said.

The church on Court Street was stone, with a side door that the sexton left unlocked for early prayer.

I let myself in at ten past five and stood in the dark among the candles.

There was a pillar in the left aisle, wide enough to hide a man my size.

I put my back to it and waited.

Claire came at five to six, in her gray coat, and sat in the fourth pew from the front.

The tall lawyer came at six exactly.

I had known him for eleven years and had never seen him sweat.

He was sweating now, and his tie sat crooked at his throat.

He sat down in the pew beside hers, not turning his head.

"Thank you for coming, Ms. Winslow."

"You said you'd trade."

"I did."

"Then start."

"I have been Trevor Langley's counsel for years, and Harold Rhodes's for eleven," he said. "I have drawn up every trust Harold has ever bought and every document he has ever had signed. I know where each one is buried."

"Say what he did."

"I record my calls. Every one. All eleven years."

I felt my pulse in my teeth.

"A man like Harold keeps no papers," the lawyer said. "He says what he wants aloud, and the person on the other end is the one who can be blamed. I learned in my second year that I would be that person one day. So I kept his voice."
