Chapter 40: The Locker

Madison's elbow hit the bald man's folder, and it went skidding across the linoleum.

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry," she said, loud enough for the whole floor.

The bald man looked down at her, and at the baby, and he bent for the folder.

She stepped on it.

"Wait," Madison said. "You're not hospital staff. Staff wear the blue badge, and yours says visitor."

"Ma'am, I'm collecting a client's property."

"The client is a man who was shot this morning."

She took her phone out of the diaper bag with her free hand and held it up, screen toward her own face.

I knew that gesture.

I had watched her make it a year ago, the morning she went live to tell two million strangers I was a thief.

"Hi, everyone," Madison said brightly, to the phone. "I'm live from the third floor, because a man in a gold pin is trying to walk out with the belongings of a patient who was shot in the face today. Say hi."

The baby, who had decided it was his turn, began to scream.

"Ma'am, turn that off."

"I can't, he's on the air. Look at the camera, sir. Show everyone your letter."

The nurse had stopped, with the plastic bag halfway across the counter.

A man in scrubs came out of a room to look.

People began to stand in the corridor and take out their own phones.

Patricia walked in beside Madison and put a hand on the baby's back.

"This is the man," Patricia told the nurse, in the voice that had once run four galas. "I know the man who employs him. If you hand that bag to him, I will be on the telephone to your hospital board before he reaches the elevator."
