Chapter 27: The Paper

Six thousand people in blue sat on the frozen lake and breathed white clouds into the air.

I sat in the front row behind the glass with Cody on my left and a thermos of cocoa in my lap.

Four rows up and to the right, Nate's sister Jess sat in a green parka with her hands folded over a very obvious bump.

She gave me a small wave.

"Do you want to go through it again?" Cody asked.

"No."

"Okay." He rubbed his knees. "I'm going to throw up."

"Not on the glass."

On the ice, Northfield State was beating Duluth two to one, and every time Brody touched the puck the blue section booed him.

They did it in time with each other, loudly.

I watched him skate through it with his jaw set and his phone recording in the bench bag, as promised.

I held mine in my hand with the screen dark.

The buzzer ended the second period.

The teams went down the tunnel, and a man in a Northfield State jacket carried a microphone out to a square of red carpet at center ice.

Kayla followed him.

She wore a long white coat and a blue scarf, and she put one gloved hand flat on her stomach as she walked.

The student section came to its feet.

Her parents stood at a heated table near the boards, a woman in a camel coat and a man holding a phone up to film.

Kayla took the microphone and let the cheering run until it ran out.

"Thank you," she said. Her voice shook in all the right places. "I wasn't going to say this in front of so many people. But this year has been the hardest of my life, and this team has been our family."

Cody stood up beside me.

"I found out three weeks ago," Kayla said. "Cody and I are going to have a baby."

The sound that came off the stands was enormous.

Her sorority sisters screamed.

Her mother put both hands over her mouth.

Kayla turned toward us across the ice, with the tears already on her cheeks.
