Chapter 29: Not Yet

Maggie's POV

Cody was on the porch at nine on Sunday morning, sitting on the top step with an envelope on his knee.

I came out in Brody's sweatshirt and sat down one step below him.

The street was white and quiet, and somebody down the block was shoveling.

"I didn't sleep," he said.

"Me neither."

"Kayla's father drove to Linden Street last night," he said. "He and I went in together and packed her things."

I turned to look at him.

"He wrote the landlord a check for everything through May. Your name's off the lease. Your half of the deposit is in here." He held out the envelope. "And the key you gave back. He says he's sorry. He said it three times."

I took the envelope.

It was thick, and I didn't open it.

"Where is she?"

"At their house in Rochester. She isn't coming back for the spring semester." He rubbed his thumb along the step. "Her mom told me she hasn't said a word since the car."

I waited for the satisfaction.

What came instead was tiredness, and a small cold place in my chest I decided not to look at yet.

"I'm not going to feel bad about it," I said.

"You shouldn't."

"I'm going to feel something. I lived with her for three years."

"I know." He swallowed. "I did the same, and I didn't see her either."

He looked at the street.

"Mags, I have to ask. I know I don't get to."

"Then don't."

"If I'd come up the stairs first. If I'd said it before she did." He looked at me then, his green eyes wet. "Was there ever a version where it was us?"
