Chapter 8: Whose Baby

Nobody at the table touched a fork after that.

"Congratulations," Hazel said to Connor, very evenly. "I'd love to hear whose it is."

Connor's mouth opened.

"Mine," he said, a beat too late.

Natalie's eyes flicked to me and away.

"Of course it's his," she said. "Probably."

"Probably?" Hazel said.

"Eleven weeks ago, Miles and I were still engaged." Natalie lifted one shoulder. "Nobody can say for certain. It's exciting, isn't it?"

I stood up.

Hazel's hand slid off my knee and caught my wrist under the tablecloth, hard.

"Sit," she mouthed.

"I need air."

"Take your time, Miles," Connor said, and glanced at his watch. "We have to go. Natalie's tired. Hazel, thank you for the evening. This was very mature of you."

He pulled out Natalie's chair.

She took her purse and, passing me, bent and said in my ear, "It's yours if you want it to be. It's his if I do."

Then she was gone in a cloud of perfume, and the front door shut.

I went out through the glass doors onto the stone terrace.

The lake lay black beyond the lawn.

I gripped the railing.

I had known Natalie for three years.

I did the math twice, and then I stopped, because the math could not tell me what I wanted.

Behind me, the doors opened and closed.

Hazel came to stand beside me.

She had taken off her shoes, and she held them in one hand.

"You did well," she said.

"I want to put his head through his own truck."

"I know."

"If it's mine, I'll have a kid with a woman who did that to me. If it's his, he walks away with everything and a kid on top."
