Chapter 22: A Choice, Not a Sacrifice

Willa's POV

I picked up the letter and held it in front of him.

"You wrote this at two in the morning," I said. "You decided it alone."

"I decided it for you."

"You decided it for me," I said. "Bram did that. He said what the pack needed and he told me where to stand, and he did it with a smile."

Cade went white around the mouth.

"That's not the same."

"I know it isn't. That's why I haven't thrown it at your head." I put the page down. "I've been waiting for the day a man says he'll rest with me after the work is done, and then there's always more work."

"I never said that."

"You wrote it. You'll give up your ranch so you can stand beside me for as long as it takes. And one day it won't be enough, and you'll be a man who gave up a pack for a woman who didn't ask."

He was quiet for a long time.

"You're right," he said, at last.

I blinked.

"I did write it for me," Cade said. "I couldn't stand to sit forty minutes away. That's a selfish reason, and I dressed it up as a gift."

"Cade."

"I'm not giving up the ranch, Willa. I'm giving you the choice." He picked up the letter. "You tell me what you want. I'll sign it if you say so, or I'll burn it, and I'll love you the same way tomorrow."

The word hung between us.

He hadn't meant to say it yet. I saw that.

He didn't take it back.

I took the page out of his hand, walked to the stove, and fed it in.
