Leo looked at me across the roof of the car.

The babies were fussing in the back.

Libby had gone very still with a stroller half folded in her hands.

"Generous visitation," Leo said into the phone.

"Every other weekend. Holidays alternating. It's standard."

"For a mother who's never spent a night away from them."

"Leo, the board isn't interested in the details. Your mother is offering you your life back."

"When do you meet?"

"Tuesday. Ten o'clock. She'd like your answer in person."

"She'll have it," Leo said.

He hung up.

Libby put the stroller down.

"Tell me you're not going," she said.

"I'm going," Leo said. He looked at me. "Can I ask you to come? You can say no."

"Why?"

"Because I said a lot of things to you on the phone this year that I didn't do," he said. "I want you to watch this one."

I looked at the four car seats in the back.

Charlie was trying to eat his own sleeve.

"Yes," I said.

On Tuesday morning Libby's mom moved into my house with a suitcase and a list.

Libby's dad brought his own coffee maker because he didn't trust mine.

We took the first flight out of Portland and were on Park Avenue by nine-thirty.

I hadn't been back since February.

The street looked exactly the same.

I didn't.

Fontana Capital took up the top six floors of a black glass tower four blocks from the penthouse.
