Chapter 15: The Bank
Hudson Savings kept its conference room on the third floor, with a long oak table and a window over the river.
The banker sat at the head of it with a manila folder squared in front of him.
I sat on his right with Rory behind my chair.
Austin came in at nine sharp with his lawyer and his mother.
He had shaved badly.
There was a nick under his jaw, and his quarter-zip had a wrinkle across the chest.
Phyllis sat down without looking at me and set her handbag in her lap with both hands.
"Mr. Tallmadge," the banker said. "Thank you for coming."
"Always happy to help," Austin said, in his dinner voice. "I assume this is about the Larkin House application?"
"It is."
"The guarantee is in order. Mr. Larkin signed it himself in February."
"He did," the banker said. "In February, Larkin Hotels was a company."
He slid a sheet across the table.
"It was dissolved by the state in May. My loan officer asked you in September whether the guarantee was still good."
