Chapter 15: Both Ways

"Say that again," Wyatt said.

"You heard me."

I had my coat on one arm and the card on the desk, and I couldn't make myself walk out.

"I came here with eleven years in ERs and a boyfriend who wouldn't give me a drawer," I said.

"I didn't have much left. But I had one thing I was sure of."

"You're a good nurse," he said.

"I thought I was a good nurse who got hired for it."

"You are."

"I can't know that now."

He took a step toward me and stopped, because I had lifted my hand.

"On my first morning I stood in your supply closet and told myself you'd chosen me because I was fast. I felt like I'd won something."

"I'd have hired you from the file."

"You didn't read the file. You read a name."

He opened his mouth and shut it.

"Every kind thing you did, I put in the pile marked professional," I said. "The coffee. The pickup truck on Dane's lawn. Your hand on my back."

"I wanted to tell you."

"You wanted to sleep with me first."

That landed, and I watched it land.

"Yes," he said. "That's true."

"I told you one night, no talk about the city. You said yes before I'd finished the sentence."

"I did."

"You never said it was a promise you could keep. You just knew it let you off." My voice shook, and I let it. "That rule cuts both ways, Wyatt. No talk of the city. I won't talk about it. You don't talk to me about it, either."

"Bethany, that isn't what I meant by it."
