Chapter 16: The Tower

"Let him run," Torren said.

He said it into my hair, in the dark at the top of the tower stairs, with his weight half on the stick and half on me.

"Gethin has the gate. Cadoc has the Long Ford. Tonight's yours."

"Aldith says you're to lie still for a week."

"Aldith has a great many opinions."

"She's right."

"I know," he said. "Open the door."

I lit his lamp and warmed a bowl of water on the little brazier.

He sat on the edge of the bed and took off his shirt with an effort he tried to hide.

I knelt between his knees with a cloth.

"Every scar," he said.

"Every one?"

"I've never let anyone. You asked on the first night, and I said no."

"You said no to a lot of things."

"I was a fool about most of them."

I washed him slowly, starting at the jaw.

Where the skin had split in the night, the weeping edge was clean, and nothing darkened under my hands.

I looked anyway.

I looked at my fingernails, and at the water, and at his skin.

There was only skin.

"It's gone," he said quietly. "You can stop checking."

"I'm a healer. I never stop checking."

His mouth twitched.
