Chapter 18: Twenty Below, Again
At eleven-fifteen I stood inside Room 4C in two sweaters under my lab coat and counted my breaths.
The thermometer by the door read twenty below, and Dot had sworn on her mother's grave it would not move.
The red bulb hung over my head.
I had the grey wedge in my right fist and the green-striped keycard in my left, and I was not shaking.
Through the little window the lab was dark except for the emergency lights.
Down the glass corridor, one office had its blinds drawn and its lights off.
Behind those blinds were eleven directors, the chair with her cane and her thermos, my father with a bottle of champagne, Dot, and the man I loved.
I did not look at that office.
At eleven-thirty-one the lab door chirped.
It was the code Dot had texted Cameron an hour ago, and it let him in.
He came across the lab in his navy overcoat with a cooler in one hand and a folder under his arm.
