Three hundred people came to the Dowager's ball, and every one of them looked at my ears.
I had pinned my hair up for the first time since I came to the house.
I wore the plain blue gown that Tilly had pressed three times, with no jewels, and my scrubbed hands in white gloves.
Hugh stood at the foot of the great stair in a black coat with his scarred eyebrow lifted.
When I reached the third step from the top, he looked up at me and did not smile, because he knew.
The chandeliers were lit.
The music was playing, and a line of dancers was forming in the long gold room beyond.
The Dowager sat in her chair beside the double doors in her black silk, with every diamond she owned on her breast.
I saw the man from Bow Street by the pillar.
I saw the little editor in the green coat by the ices, with a pencil behind his ear.
Then I saw the Earl of Marchbank climb the first flight of the stair.
