Chapter 11: The Garage
Roman Aldecott had just locked the trust letter in his desk drawer when his phone lit up with Jamie's name.
*Don't panic. Small spotting at work. I'm in a bay. I'm fine. DON'T PANIC.*
He read it once.
The bond lurched in his chest, a hard cold yank down the whole length of his spine.
Somewhere in that thread he felt a thin high note of fear that was not his.
He stood up so fast the chair hit the wall.
Nine people sat around the table with their mouths open.
"Meeting's over," Roman said.
He drove forty-one minutes of road in nineteen.
He did not remember any of it later, only the dashboard.
There was a hot white silence in his skull, and his own hands on the wheel.
He had been afraid exactly three times in his life.
The first was a lighting rig coming down, with a girl under it.
The second was a phone call at four in the morning, nine years ago, from his father's housekeeper.
This was the third.
The hospital was a huge brown county building in East LA, and its lobby emptied as he came in.
A security guard took one step toward him and thought better of it.
"Where is he?" Roman said, to the nearest nurse. "Jamie Hendry. Nursing student. Fourth floor."
"Sir, I can't..."
"Where."
She pointed with a shaking finger.
He found the bay on the fourth floor at a dead run.
Jamie sat on the edge of a gurney in blue scrubs, one sneaker dangling, with a nurse's hand on his wrist.
His face was white and freckled.
He was scowling, which Roman recognized, with a violence of relief, as the thing he did when he was terrified.
