Chapter 12: Article Nine

Constance Aldecott's black car turned into the drive while the process servers were still shifting their feet.

She got out of the back seat in her navy suit and her pearl brooch, and walked up the front steps without hurrying.

"Roman," she said. "Mr. Hendry. I thought we might do this in person. It's kinder."

"You've said that before," Jamie said.

"And I meant it then."

Jamie's hand was still wrapped around Roman's, and he felt it go rigid.

His own heart was thudding, because the afternoon had already taken everything he had, and a cold voice in his head said *more is coming.*

"Sign for it," Constance told the nearer server.

The man held out the court envelope.

Roman took it, and did not open it.

"I'll read it for you," Constance said, "since Mr. Hendry is entitled to hear it. Article Nine of the Aldecott Family Trust."

She did not look at the page.

She had it by heart.

"Section four. The carrier of any heir of the Aldecott line shall receive no share, no standing and no claim from the family. The carrier shall be removed from the Aldecott property upon the delivery of the child. The child shall be raised under the Trust, in the guardianship of the Trustee."

A wave went by in the surf below.

"I'm the Trustee," Constance said. "I have been for twenty-six years."
