Chapter 18: Sit Down, Desmond
"Dexter was nineteen," Desmond said.
His voice was gentle, and it carried to every corner of the ballroom.
"He was bright and kind, and he loved boats. Some of you remember him at the regatta. He took first in his class that summer."
A woman near the front pressed her napkin to her mouth.
"I was fond of him," Desmond said. "We all were. And I have thought, for nine years, about the night he died."
Malcolm sat motionless beside Perrin.
Perrin could feel the tremor in his hand.
"The Coast Guard report is a matter of record," Desmond went on. "The boat was unattended. The boy's guardian, my nephew, was asleep in his office on the other side of the city."
A murmur went through the tables.
"I do not blame him. Grief is a terrible thing. But I ask this room tonight, before you vote, a question I think the company deserves to have answered."
He raised the glass.
"Is a man who sleeps through his brother's death fit to keep a family's fortune?" he said. "And is it wise to leave the helm to someone who now passes his nights with a café boy, and his days in a fog?"
