Chapter 9: Dexter's Drawer

Dexter's POV

By Monday night the condo was half empty, and I had moved into the spare room.

Casey had left on Sunday night.

Her boxes were gone, and the closet on her side stood open and empty.

The pelican magnet lay on the counter where I'd dropped it.

I picked it up and put it in the junk drawer, then took it out and put it on the fridge again.

Six years, and the only thing she had ever asked me for was to come to a bay I had visited without her.

Casey never asked for anything, and that was what I told myself.

If she wanted a bigger ring, she would say so.

If she wanted me at the grave, she would say so.

She had said so, two years ago, and I had gone to a photo shoot.

I put my forehead against the cold fridge door.

At nine o'clock, my mother let herself in with her own key, straight from Casey's building.

"You look terrible," Denise said, and set a grocery bag on the counter. "Eat something. I brought soup."

"Did Casey say anything?"

"A man turned up at Rosalie's door with a letter from Frank, for both girls." She unpacked the soup as if she were reporting the weather. "They took it into the kitchen and shut me out of the room."

I held the counter edge.

"Mom. I need you to cancel the island."

"No."

"I'm not asking."

"Dexter." She sat down at the island and folded her hands. "The deposit is paid. The guests have flights. Your fiancée had a panic, and in a week she'll be calling you to apologize."
