Chapter 8: The Other Daughter

Rosalie's couch had a spring in the middle that found my spine every night.

On Monday evening I was lying on it, staring at her ceiling, when somebody pounded on the apartment door.

Rosalie looked through the peephole and said a word that I won't repeat.

"It's his mother," she said. "And the other one."

"Don't open it."

"I'm not going to open it. I'm going to enjoy this."

She opened it.

Denise stood in the hallway in a cream blazer with her pearl earrings on, and next to her, in a gray cardigan, with her hair down and her clip missing, stood Lindy.

"Casey," Denise said. "We need to talk like adults."

"Then you should have called first."

"You don't answer. You've turned off your location. Dexter says you've canceled the condo."

"I haven't canceled the condo. I've told your son to leave it."

Rosalie leaned on the doorframe and folded her arms.

"You can talk here," she said. "I'm staying."

Denise glanced at her, then back at me.

"Lindy has something to say. Hear her out."

Lindy took a step forward.

Up close she looked different from the Friday-night version. She looked tired, and younger, and she had my father's chin.

"I wanted to tell you in person," she said. "I wanted to do this ten different ways, and Dexter said wait, and I waited, and now it's the worst way."

"Did you know?" I asked. "Always?"

"Since I was eleven. My mom told me. He came on weekends and holidays. In summer he took me to the bay." Her voice shook. "He said you'd hate me."
