Chapter 7: Until Friday

I got home on Sunday night with sand in my shoes.

Dexter was sitting at the kitchen island with a beer and his laptop open to a seating chart.

He looked up and smiled, relieved.

"There you are. Where did you go? I've been calling since yesterday."

I put my bag on the floor.

I had not rehearsed this. All the way home I had tried, and every version came out as screaming.

"Pelican Landing," I said.

His smile stayed where it was for about two seconds.

Then it slid off his face.

"What?"

"The glowing bay. The shop with the sign. The man named Kurt who has your name in his ledger." I took out my phone, found the photo, and set it on the island. "Family guest. G. Pennick."

Dexter didn't look at the screen.

He looked at me.

"Casey," he said. "Sit down."

"No."

"Please."

"Tell me who Lindy is."

He closed the laptop slowly and put both hands flat on top of it.

"Your dad had another daughter," he said. "Lindy's his. You have a sister."

I had known it for a day. I had said it in my head a hundred times.

Hearing it out loud, in my own kitchen, in the voice of the man I was going to marry, made me put one hand on the counter.

"How long?"

"Since our second summer together."

"Six years."

"Your dad told me." He rubbed his face. "He took me fishing, and he told me. He made me promise to wait until you were ready."

"Ready for what?"

"For Lindy. He said you'd been left once already, by your mom, and he didn't want you to lose him too. He said he'd tell you himself after the wedding."
