Chapter 16: Seven to Two
Cora's POV
Rafferty told me about the trust at eleven on Wednesday night, in the dark of our bedroom.
I did not speak to him for the whole of breakfast.
"You gave me every vote you own," I said in the elevator on Thursday, "and you didn't ask."
"I know."
"If I'd said no, you'd have had no one to say it to."
"I know that, too."
"Don't do it again."
"I won't."
"Good," I said, and I took his arm, because the doors had opened on the fortieth floor.
The boardroom had a table long enough to land a plane on.
Nine directors sat along it, and Thaddeus Belcher sat at the head with his gold watch on the leather folder.
Nicolette sat at his right hand in a grey suit, poised with a pad and pen to take minutes.
She smiled at me.
I smiled back.
Rafferty sat at the foot of the table, and I took the chair beside him.
"Mrs. Gage," Thaddeus said. "We didn't expect you to use the courtesy."
"I'm the trustee of the voting block, Mr. Belcher. I'd say the courtesy is mine."
A director halfway down the table coughed.
Thaddeus's heavy brows drew together.
He opened his folder.
"Gentlemen, we are here on a single motion. The chief executive officer has exposed this company to public scandal, in his personal conduct and in his marriage."
"He has placed a woman with a history in the very office where she handles confidential files."
"I move that he be removed."
"Seconded," said the man beside him.
"Before anyone votes," I said, "I would like to play something."
