Chapter 23: Ask Me Tonight

Cora's POV

I held the microphone, and two hundred reporters leaned in.

Beckett stood three feet away with his hands open at his sides, white to the lips.

"That's not what I would have asked for," I said. "Here is what I'd ask for."

Nobody breathed.

"I don't want your chair, Beckett. I've watched that chair eat you for six years."

A few people laughed, and I saw his shoulders loosen.

"Imogen Lowry runs this company better than anyone in it. She should be chief executive. I'll take the chair of the board, and the veto on every lease, and I'll be the person who says no."

In the front row Imogen put her hand flat on her chest.

"You keep the company's name on the door, Beckett. You build things. You go home at six."

"And what do you want for yourself?" he said, hoarse, into the whole ballroom.

I put the microphone back on its stand.

"Ask me tonight," I said. "Not here."

His laugh broke halfway through, and he covered his eyes, and the room roared.

He found me at my own door at ten.

He had a cardboard box of Nate's rolls in one hand and nothing in the other, and he stood on the step and waited to be told.

I took the box, set it on the floor, and kissed him in the doorway.

It was slow.
