Chapter 19: The Clause
Helena's lawyers had a conference room made of glass, with a table long enough to land a plane on.
She sat at the far end of it in the red coat, with the tall lawyer on her right and the other on her left.
A plate of pastries sat untouched between us.
"Mr. Acheson," said the tall lawyer. "Thank you for coming."
"Thank you for calling it," said Stewart.
He pulled out my chair before his own.
I sat, and under the table his hand closed over my knee and stayed there, warm and heavy.
"Before we start," said the tall lawyer, "my client has a proposal."
"I'm sure she does."
Helena leaned forward.
She had put her face on, the soft one, with lowered lashes, the one that must have worked on Bradley.
"Stewart," she said. "I was wrong on the steps of that school. I was upset. I want what's best for Freddie, and so do you."
"Go on."
"Joint custody. Alternating weeks. I drop the petition, the photographs go in a drawer, and we all behave like adults."
"And Article Nine?"
Her smile didn't move.
"I don't know what you mean."
"Page forty-one of my grandfather's trust," said Stewart. "I filed a notice of amendment at nine this morning. You were served at nine-forty."
