Chapter 21: The Wrist
Chak had killed three men in his life, and each time he had felt nothing.
He felt something now.
It started at the base of his skull and ran down the whole length of him, hot and white.
He knew without being told that if the pistol in his uncle's hand moved one inch, he would cross the room.
He would tear the man's throat out with his teeth.
"Put it down, Uncle."
"No." Wiroj's voice was soft, almost kind. "You have won the board with a story and a boy. I know what you'll do with the house. You'll hand it to a child who counts things. It will be gone in five years."
"Better him than you."
"Better no one." The barrel did not waver. "Come here, Chakrit. Step away from your heir. I will have the old man's page, and I will have my brother's chair, and nobody here will say a word, because nobody here wants a hole in his head."
Nobody moved.
Pim had her hand over her mouth.
The old dockman at the end of the table stood with his fists on the wood, and he was shaking.
