Chapter 20: Darian Stops

Darian's POV

I did not feel the pain in my leg.

I felt Calla's hands on my ribs, and under them a quiet so large that it left no room for fear.

Dunstan was looking at her.

He was staring at the place where his voice had gone through her and out the other side.

For the first time in my life I saw him not know what to do.

"Cal," I said. "Go back to Joan."

"No."

"Please."

She looked at me for a long second, and then at the old elder, who gave one small nod.

She let go of my arm.

It took everything I had to let her go.

She walked to the edge of the ring, and Joan took her hand.

I turned back to the man who had poisoned my family.

He had not shifted again.

He stood on the grass in his skin with the silver in his beard shining in the torchlight, breathing hard.

"You're a boy," he said. "You don't know what a pack is. I've spent thirty years building Redfall into something that will outlast us both. I'd have fed Carraway to it in a year, and you'd have thanked me, because you'd have been too fogged to see."

"You hurt Joan," I said.

"I would have hurt anyone."

I shifted.

The change took me from the spine out, and I let it.

For the first time in two years the wolf in me did not fight me.

We were of one mind.

He came for me as a wolf, huge and fast, and I met him in the middle of the grass.

I was smaller.

I was also not afraid of him.

He caught my shoulder and I went with it, rolling under his weight.
