Chapter 8: She Speaks for Me
The council hall was a long room of black beams, with three elders on a bench at the far end and the whole pack standing along the walls.
I stood alone in the middle of the floor.
Dunstan sat at the elders' left hand, as a guest of honor, with his fingers laced over his stomach.
He looked sorry.
"I take no pleasure in this," he said. "Joan Carraway lies sick, and the only person who has handled her food, her blood and her tray this week is a human."
"I'm her nurse," I said.
"Humans do not speak at council," the oldest elder said, not unkindly. "That is the law."
"Then who speaks for me?"
No one moved.
Forty faces I had eaten dinner with for ten years looked at the floor, and I understood that none of them was going to.
I held up Mack's paper anyway.
"This is a lab report from Harlow Creek. It says there's wolfsbane in Joan's blood, in the tea, and in the oil Delaney Westerfield wears. It says the dose doubles every two days."
A murmur went around the hall.
"Paper," Dunstan said gently. "From a human clinic. In the hands of the girl accused of the crime."
"It has a name and a date on it."
"Written by a friend. A friend she slept in the house of, I'm told, for four nights." He turned to the elders. "I would not insult her by saying she forged it. I would say only that it is not evidence."
"It is a wolf's life," I said.
"A wolf's life is weighed by wolves."
The oldest elder cleared his throat.
"The accused will be held at the gate until the Gathering, when the guest law may be satisfied by..."
