Chapter 13: Ninth Street Bridge
Noel didn't look down at his chest.
He looked at Clay.
"It's for my asthma," he said.
"You don't have asthma."
"It's a very small inhaler."
Clay laughed again, and held out his hand, palm up.
Noel peeled the tape off under his shirt and put the recorder in Clay's palm.
Clay dropped it in his water glass.
The little blue light blinked twice under the ice and went out.
"Your friend with the ambulance got about four minutes," Clay said. "None of them useful."
He was wrong about that.
The four minutes had "my private stock" in them.
Two men got up from the next booth.
They'd been eating salads the whole time.
One was tall and quiet, with a wedding ring.
The other one came close enough to take Noel's elbow, and he smelled like cigarettes.
Noel had only met that smell once, secondhand, on Fletcher's face in a motel parking lot.
"You were at the truck," Noel said.
The smoker squeezed his elbow until the bone hurt.
"Mr. Arbogast is leaving by the kitchen," Clay said. "He's had a hard week. He's emotional."
