Chapter 16: Your Rule, Your Three Days
Merry's POV
On the second morning in the flat, I woke up first.
Bridget had left at dawn for work, with a note on the kettle that said *Do not go outside. Love you. Eat.*
Elliot had slept in the chair by the window with his legs stretched out and his head tipped back.
He had not touched me once since the hotel.
He had kept my terms for a day and a half, perfectly.
I watched his chest rise and fall.
I watched the sun climb across his jaw.
My own body felt like a held breath.
I got up, crossed the floorboards in his borrowed shirt, and stood in front of the chair.
His eyes opened.
"Merry."
"I'm starting it," I said.
He sat up very slowly.
"Say what you mean."
"I mean get on the mattress."
"Your rule," he said. His voice had gone rough. "I don't speak for you."
"Then don't. Just do it."
He got up, and he did.
He sat on the edge of the mattress with his hands open on his knees, and I stood between his legs and pulled the shirt off over my head.
The daylight lit every inch of me.
I wanted him to see all of it.
His eyes went over me, and he exhaled as if I'd hit him.
"God, you're beautiful."
"Then stop looking," I said, "and touch me."
He didn't move.
I frowned.
"Elliot."
"Your rule was that I wait for you to start it," he said. "You've started it. I'm waiting for the rest."
"What rest?"
"You said three days. To show you who I am." His mouth tilted. "I'm not going to be the man who just does what he's told. Tell me what you want, Merry. Out loud. Your rule, your three days."
