Chapter 19: Rule Two

"No real feelings," I said. "In either direction."

"Is it true?"

"No."

"Since when?"

"Since you made me toast," I said. "Maybe since the porch. I don't know where the line is. I stopped being able to find it."

He nodded slowly, staring at the doorframe.

"I'm angry," he said.

"You should be."

"I'm so angry that my hands are shaking."

"I've been angry for a day, and a night, and I've been sitting in here trying to be fair, because that's what I do."

"I'm tired of being fair."

"Then don't."

He lifted his eyes.

They were hazel, and wet, and burning.

"Come inside," he said.

I stepped over the threshold.

The door shut behind me.

He didn't turn the lock.

He put one palm flat on the wood beside my head, and the other on my waist.

I felt him breathing, hard and uneven, a few inches from my mouth.

"I'm going to tell you what I want," he said. "And you're going to tell me what you want. No sheet. No order."

"Yes."

"I want you," he said.

"God help me, I want you more than I did on Saturday."

"I want to be furious while I have you, and I want you to let me."

My knees almost went.

"Let you," I said.

"Yes."

"I want you angry," I said.

"I want you to take it out on me."

"I don't want gentle."
