Chapter 12: The President's Deal

Vernon stayed in his truck until I opened my own gate.

Then he climbed down, slowly, with a hand on the door.

He was sixty-three, and for the first time I saw that he was old.

"Walked from Cutler Road?" he said.

"Part of it."

"I'd have driven you."

"I know what you'd have done."

He took off his cap and held it.

"Can I sit on your porch, Diana? I won't ask to come in."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I walked up the path and sat on the top step, and he lowered himself onto the one below, and neither of us said anything while a neighbour's dog barked twice and gave up.

"My son took off his cut for you," Vernon said.

"He took it off for you. You told him to."

"I told him to choose."

"You told him a man picks one house."

"And he did." He turned the cap in his big hands. "I want him back in it. I want the club to see him back in it. That's the whole reason I'm here."

"Then say it to Dean."

"I'm saying it to you, because it's your house he'd be coming home to."

I said nothing.

"Here's what I can do," he said. "I'll hand Dean his patch Sunday. I'll have the table call it a misunderstanding. The baby gets raised on Pine Street with a monthly check and two Saturdays, and he's entered in the book under a first name that isn't Wyatt, if that's what you need. In return you let your husband come home."
