Chapter 21: Dunleavy's Reopened
Dunleavy's opened again on the first Thursday of December.
The new oak bar still smelled of varnish, and the brass taps shone.
By seven o'clock the room was full.
The regulars who had watched my father sell me in this same spot stood three deep at the rail.
I stood behind the back bar with my sleeves rolled and pulled the first pint.
I slid it down the oak to the foreman.
He lifted it to the room, and the room roared.
Orla sat at the corner table in red lipstick and a silver sequin jacket, reading the menu out loud to the priest.
"Shepherd's pie," the priest said happily. "I'll have the pie."
"You'll have two," Orla said.
In the kitchen doorway, my father stood in a white apron with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
He had stood at the dish pit since six that morning.
His hands were red and cracked.
I walked over with an envelope and held it out.
"Your wages," I said. "Twelve dollars an hour, and the dishes are all yours until I say otherwise."
