Chapter 6: The Wife's Signature
On Friday morning I woke up with Niall's mouth on my neck.
It was gray outside the third-floor window and the radiator ticked.
He was behind me, all that heat and weight, one arm wrapped across my stomach.
He had been coming to my bed since Sunday night.
I hadn't once told him to stop.
"Today you sign," he said into my skin.
"Mm-hm."
"They'll try to rattle you."
"Let them."
His hand slid down my belly and between my legs, and I arched back against him with a gasp.
"You're already wet," he said, low and rough.
"You've been breathing on my neck for ten minutes."
"I've been waiting for you to wake up."
"Then stop waiting."
He pushed my knee forward and pulled my hips back, and his cock slid into me from behind in one long, slow stroke that made me bite the pillow.
He took his time.
He fucked me lazy and deep with his mouth at my ear, telling me how I felt, how tight, how hot, how he thought about it all day in meetings with grown men.
I reached back and dug my fingers into his thigh.
When I came it was quiet and shuddering, my whole body clenched around him, and he followed with a groan against my shoulder, hips snapped hard against mine.
He kissed my hair.
"Mrs. Carrick," he said.
"Mr. Carrick."
"Get dressed."
The dock office stood at the end of Terminal Road in a squat cinder-block building with a flag over the door.
By ten in the morning the yard in front of it was full.
Three hundred dockhands in hard hats and canvas jackets stood in the cold between stacks of containers.
They had come to watch.
I walked in with Niall at my left and Kieran at my right, in a black wool dress and my mother's St. Brigid medal.
Seamus waited on the office steps with six of his captains.
"Mrs. Carrick," he said, with a bow that was almost a sneer. "We're waiting on the clerk. He seems to have lost the book."
"Has he," I said.
"It happens."
