Chapter 7: Niall Saw

Niall didn't say a word.

He walked across the garage, took my hand, and led me up the back stairs.

Three flights.

His grip was warm and absolutely steady, and I couldn't read it.

I waited for the explosion.

I had grown up in a bar, and I knew the silence men go into before they hit a wall.

He took me into the bedroom, shut the door, and turned the lock.

Then he stood with his back against it, looking at me.

"Say something," I said.

"I watched him for six days."

My stomach dropped.

"I watched him not touch you," Niall said. "In the car. On the landing. Every time you walked into a room and he found a reason to look at a window. Six days, Kit. He didn't even take your coat."

"Niall, I..."

"I'm not finished."

He pushed off the door and came across the room slowly.

His eyes were very pale and very bright.

"I'd like to tell you I'm angry," he said. "I'm not. I'm so jealous I can't see straight, and I'd like to tell you why."

"Why?"

"Because I understood him."

I stopped breathing.

"I'd have kissed you in that garage too," he said. "I'd have done it the first day."

He stopped in front of me, close enough that I felt the heat coming off his chest.

"I want to know exactly how he kissed you."

"Niall."

"Tell me."

My face burned.

"He... it was soft," I said. "At first. He didn't move. He stood there like he didn't know where to put his hands."

"And then?"

"And then he pulled me against him. And he made a sound."

"What kind of sound?"

"Like he was starving."

Niall's jaw worked.

His hand came up and cupped my cheek, thumb across my lower lip.

"I'm going to kiss you like that," he said. "Because you liked it. And then I'm going to make you forget there was ever anything else."

His mouth came down on mine.

It was not like the study, not like the mornings.
