Chapter 8: The Warehouse
Niall found him in forty minutes.
He did it with one phone call, to the gray-haired man from the church, whose name turned out to be the yard foreman.
"Cold storage four," the foreman said. "They took a forklift driver's keys at noon and ran everyone out."
We drove there with the lights off.
Niall didn't speak.
His left hand rested on his thigh with the shamrock knuckles gone white, and in the back of the car, Orla was loading a gun with the calm of a woman folding laundry.
"You stay in the car," Niall told me.
"No."
"Kit."
"He came into a fire for me."
Niall looked at me in the mirror for one long second.
"Stay behind me," he said.
Cold storage four was a windowless block of steel on the far end of the terminal, with a loading door the size of a garage.
Forty dockhands stood outside it in a ragged half-circle, not working, not talking.
Word had traveled.
They parted for us without being asked.
Inside, it was cold enough to see my breath.
Frozen pallets rose in rows to the ceiling, and under a single bare bulb in the center aisle, Kieran sat in a metal chair.
His hands were tied behind him.
His left eye was swollen shut and his lip was split, and there was blood down the front of his white shirt.
Seamus's three captains stood around him.
One of them held a pistol at the side of Kieran's head.
Seamus himself leaned against a pallet jack with his hands in his cardigan pockets.
"Niall," he said pleasantly. "I wondered how long it would take."
Kieran lifted his head.
His good eye found me.
It went wide, and then it went furious, and I knew what he was about to say.
"Don't," I said.
"Kit, get out."
