Chapter 12: Zero

My mother came up in the penthouse elevator at nine o'clock that night with a paper bag in her hand.

She wore her good wool coat over her apron.

The housekeeper took one look at her and went to put on a pot of tea without being asked.

"Sit down, Mom," I said.

"I'll stand."

She would not sit in a stranger's living room, and I understood.

Jonas stood a polite distance behind me.

"Hannah," my mother said. "I should have said this on Sunday, and I lost my nerve."

She took a folded envelope out of the bag.

The paper was soft and yellow at the creases.

"I kept every letter from that hospital," she said.

"I kept them in the drawer with the Christmas cards."

"I never looked at this one again after the day it came."

She put it in my hands.

It was a billing statement from St. Luke's, with a blue hospital logo and a column of numbers.

At the bottom, in bold type, it said, Balance: $0.00.

The date at the top read February 23, 2023.

I read it twice.

"This is the wrong date," I said.

"No."

"Mom, I signed the contract on March 3."

"I know when you signed."

"The money came after. That was the whole deal."

"The transplant coordinator told me the surgery date depended on a payment," I said. "She said it was due March 3."

"She said it was due," my mother said. "The surgery was scheduled already. Nobody explained that to you, because you never opened the mail."
